Ingredients
- Cheerios cereal
- Chex cereal (corn or rice)
- salted peanuts
- pretzels (I like the sticks)
- Valentine M&M’s candies
- white chocolate (You can also use white almond bark or vanilla-flavored melting wafers.)
- vegetable shortening
- non-stick cooking spray (optional)
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions

Step 1: Line a 9 x 13-inch baking dish or pan with parchment paper and set aside. (If you don’t have parchment, you can spray the dish with non-stick cooking spray.)
Step 2: Add both cereals, peanuts, pretzels and half of the M&M’s to a large mixing bowl. (I add the other half of the M&M’s last because they look prettier in the mix that way. You can skip this part if you want and just add all of the M&M’s in the beginning.)
Step 3: Mix the ingredients together.

Step 4: Add white chocolate and shortening to a microwave-safe measuring cup or bowl.
Step 5: Melt in the microwave in 30-second increments until completely melted and smooth, stirring in between. (You can also use a double boiler to melt the chocolate, but I find the microwave easier.)
Step 6: Add the melted white chocolate to the bowl with the cereals, peanuts, pretzels and M&M’s.

Step 7: Mix melted white chocolate with the cereal ingredients using a large spoon or silicone spatula until everything looks evenly coated.
Step 8: Spread the mixture evenly in the baking dish.
Step 9: Let snack mix cool and harden in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes. You can also let it sit at room temperature for 1 hour if you don’t want to put it in the refrigerator.

Step 10: Carefully break up the snack mix with your hands.
Step 11: Add the remaining M&M’s and toss.
Enjoy!
Hint: Put this snack mix in a Mason jar and tie a red or pink bow around the mouth of the jar. It makes such a cute gift for your Valentine!
Variations
- Instead of using plain Cheerios, use a flavored variety like chocolate or honey nut.
- This recipe calls for milk chocolate M&M’s, but you can use any flavor to change up the taste of your snack mix.
- You can add other mix-ins to this recipe like raisins, craisins or other dried fruit.
Equipment
- 9 x 13-inch baking dish or pan
- large mixing bowl
- large spoon or rubber/silicone spatula
- measuring cups and spoons
- 2-cup glass measuring cup
- double boiler (optional)
- parchment paper (optional)
Storage
Valentine bait snack mix can be stored in an airtight storage bag or container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
Top Tips
- Make sure the white chocolate is set before breaking up the snack mix. I like the refrigerator method best to ensure it hardens.
- Make sure your bowls and spoons are 100% dry. Even a single drop of water can cause the white chocolate to seize into a clumpy mess.
