Best Fudge Chocolate Frosting Recipe

For so long, I have been looking for the chocolate fudge frosting of my dreams. Finally, my frosting dreams have come true with this Best Fudge Chocolate Frosting Recipe!

Don’t get me wrong. I will eat ANY chocolate frosting on any kind of chocolate cake. But most of the time, I find chocolate frostings to be sickly sweet. I LOVE sweets! But sometimes it can be too much.

This recipe is perfection. Not too sweet and tons of rich chocolate flavor!

This frosting recipe comes together a little different because you melt the butter and mix the cocoa in first. I found a few different similar recipes online for this method and this is what I came up with myself.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (185g) butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cup (150g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup (180g) half and half
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 1/2 cups (563g) powdered sugar

Instructions

  • In a medium-sized saucepan, melt butter on medium-low heat.
  • Add cocoa powder and stir until combined. Mixture will be very thick.
  • Transfer to the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl and let cool for 10-15 minutes.
  • Add half and half and vanilla extract and mix on low until combined.
  • Add powdered sugar and start mixing on low. Increase to medium until thick and creamy and all lumps are gone.

Notes
The calorie content in this recipe is based on one cup of frosting.
This recipe makes enough frosting to cover a 2-layer 8 or 9-inch cake, a single layer 9 x 13-inch cake, generously swirl 12 cupcakes or cover the tops of 24 cupcakes.
Store frosting covered in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
Frosting can be frozen for 1 month in an airtight freezer bag or container.
